How we came, what we do

Comas, Lima

The first Canadian missionaries went to Cuba for 10 years before their expulsion by the communist regime. Then the missionaries went to Peru in 1962 in a new shanty-town on the outskirts of Lima to run a vocational school, Jesus Obrero, founded by the OMI. The technical school prepared thousands of young men and became an important tool of development for the population. A cooperative (saving and credit bank) was also founded by a brother to help the alumni.

Tingo Maria A group of brothers went to Tingo Maria in 1965, on the other side of the Andes, close to the jungle, to run the Padre Abad College  founded by the Franciscans with some 1 000 day students and 250 in the evening school for adults.  They were also wery involved in parish activities, the formation of catechists, the animation of sports to keep the youth out of the grips of drug where it is a plague.

Chacra Cerro

Near Lima, on the farm of Chacra Cerro, a summer camp is organized for underprivileged handicapped young people for 15 years with many activities where the young have the opportunity to care for their disadvantaged brothers. There is a need to provide special education for mentally handicapped children and Bro. Bernard Houle founds the famous day center Peter Joseph Triest or CePeTri in 1998. On the same property, since 1992, we received a program of rehabilitation for drug addicts, Escuela da Vida, founded by a Montfortian Sister. Six other congregations support the program.

Curiaca del Caco

Some Brothers have been called for some years to provide a nursing service in the remote Peruvian Amazon, in favor the the Shipibo tribe.  They developed health care services and trained local people as health promotors so that nowadays the services are still provided in absence of the Brothers.

Present situation

For the time being the brothers are mostly involved in education (normal and special) and in the program for drug addicts. Candidates are welcomed for a come and see program. The formation house is in Lima the capital.
